DIY “Bug Off” Mosquito Spray Recipe & Label

Summertime is here and the mosquitoes are in full diabolical attack mode. For most of us, these bug bite assaults are aggravating and make enjoying the outdoors nearly impossible. Personally, I am trying to have a more holistic and minimalistic lifestyle, so creating a mosquito repellent that is safer is a priority. Being a creative person and knowing myself, I can’t leave this concoction unlabeled, I will forget what goodness is held inside, so I created this free “Bug Off” SVG that can be used as a decal or print and cut to label your bottle.

Items Needed:

Ingredients:

Now you don’t need to use all of the oil listed below, but I have found that these oils together make a very effective spray. You do you, use what you have. I don’t have “lemon eucalyptus” essential oil, but I do have DoTERRA’s “Terrashield” which is a blend that contains lemon eucalyptus. Please note that “lemon eucalyptus” essential oil is NOT “lemon” and “eucalyptus” oil mixed together, it is an essential oil all on it’s own.

Now if you are new to essential oils and don’t have any yet, I suggest starting with the “Terrashield” essential oil blend and mixing that with the witch hazel. You can always add more oils as you get them.

  • 2 oz Witch Hazel (please don’t use water, oil and water will not mix and it will leave the spray useless)

  • 10 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil or DoTERRA’s “Terrashield” essential oil.

  • 8 drops lemongrass essential oil

  • 5 drops cedarwood essential oil

  • 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

  • 3 drops tea tree (Melaleuca) essential oil

  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil. ( omit this if using on children under age 2)

Instructions:

  1. Clean your bottle first, so that it is clean of oils before applying label or decal. You can download the “Bug Off” free SVG file here.

  2. Using your glass bottle and funnel, add approximately 2 oz of witch hazel, leaving about 3/4” of space at the top.

  3. Add in essential oils of your choice

  4. Shake well before each use. For maximum effectiveness, apply every couple of hours.

  5. I also add a drop of the “Terrashield” to my wrist and ankles pulse points for extra protection.

  6. Store in a cool place.
